Millennium Development Goals Realization: Involving High School Students and Educators in Development Education Program and Projects

The Project ‘’Millennium Development Goals Realization:Involving High School Students and Educators in Development Education Program and Projects’’ is realized under the Call for proposals: Non-State Actors and Local Authorities – Public awareness and education for development in Europe.
In the Project participate Open Education Centre – Sofia, Bulgaria; ЕUROPEDIRECT - Carrefour Europeo Emilia – Italy; Agenda 21- Bucharest Romania; HIV-Sports –United KingdomUniversity of Fort Hare – East London, Republic of South Africa; University of Kilimanjaro – Moshi, Tanzania.
The Project will be realized in the regions of Reggio Emilia –Itally, Bucharest –Romania, Bourgas, Pleven and Sofia – Bulgaria, Eastern Cape – republic of South Africa and Region of Moshi – Tanzania.

MDG PROJECT APPLICATION FORM


Overall objectives of the Project are:

  • To create greater public awareness aboutGlobal problems and Millennium Development Goals among young people and among educators at community level .
  • To create a climate where young people feel enthusiastic about taking action on global problems for a fairer world
  • To build a support for the local policies on development issues  with focus on poverty, discrimination and Human rights.
  • To establish communication between educators and young people from developing and developed countries which will change the attitudes of the people involved in it.

 

The specific objective is:

  • To create greater public awareness aboutGlobal problems and Millennium Development Goals among young people and among educators at community level .
  • To create a climate where young people feel enthusiastic about taking action on global problems for a fairer world
  • To build a support for the local policies on development issues  with focus on poverty, discrimination and Human rights.
  • To establish communication between educators and young people from developing and developed countries which will change the attitudes of the people involved in it.

The specific objective is:

To involve young people and educators from four EU countries and Republic of South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania in the process of elaboration and promotion of Development Education programs which will reflect the global problems of the development and more specifically will reflect MDG realisation which process will inspire young people to take actions for dealing with these problems in their communities.

Development issues

  • Increased understanding of MDG based on the Human Rights approach.
  • How MDG do reflect global problems and what their realization will mean in a global context and  in the daily life of the people from Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Development Education Guidelines,
  • Development Education Trainer’s Kit,
  • Country Development Education curriculum /BG, IT, RO/
  • Country Development Education packs /BG, IT, RO/
  • International Development Education Curriculum
  • International Development Education pack.
  • Curriculum delivered in six municipalities in BG, IT and RO, in Eastern Cape, RPA, Moshi –Tanzania and in Maputo – Mozambique in  about 100 project schools.
  • A network of well trained and motivated 170 educators  /teachers and university lecturers/ which will introduce Development Education and the realization of MDG based on the Human Rights approach
  • An increased awareness among 3500 young people / High school students and University students/  in partners and associated countries about development problems in the light of MDG
  • 100 policymakers and schools inspectorates and representatives of Civic society trained about the application and the impact of Development Education curriculum.
  • Three university DE courses elaborated in Bulgarian, Italian, Romanian, English and taught at the University of Bologna, Economic Academy in Bucharest, University of Fort Hare and Bourgas Free University.
  • 3000 Interactive CDRoms based on the DE Curricula and DE packs will be printed and distributed  in four languages /Italian, English, Bulgarian, Romanian/.
  • 4000 Stills-DVD/Video “Sport without AIDS” will be published in four languages /Italian, English, Romanian, Bulgarian/..
  • An interactive Website which will try to integrate all the activities and educational materials, all development, initiatives and campaigns and to become a space for interaction between the main actors of the Project.
  • The participating schools will produce 16 E-newsletters on DE  problems and they will be disseminated to more than 1200 schools.
  • Each partner will develop brochure in own language in 2000 copies and a brochure in English in 2000 copies will be designed as well.
  • Each partner will develop Project poster and a poster in English will be designed /all posters in 1000 copies/.
  • Three country Dissemination conferences with 120 participants and one International Conference with 50 participants  in collaboration with the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe and with UNESCO Division of Human Rights, Human security will take place in Bulgaria in 2013.

  • A documentary “Sport  –  without AIDS”.  September 2011
  • Trainings of participants – teachers, public officials,  NGO members – June 2011- June 2012
  • Elaboration of Development Education country and International curriculum – January -2012
  • Realization of Development Education projects at school and in the community – January –December 2012
  • Olympic Games on Human Rights –June 2011, June -2012
  • Elaboration of country and International Development Education packs based on students projects - January 2013
  • Bilateral project development between Bulgaria, Italy, Romania and Republic of South Africa, Tanzania, Mozambique – June 2012 – April 2013

 

Target group:

  • Young People in Formal Sector education High school students  from 9 to 12 grade age from 15 to 18. High school students will go through Development Education courses and will participate in DE projects.
  • University students /about 400 – 200 in 2012 and 2013 and 200 in the third year of the Project. They will attend DE courses and about 60 of them will be involved together with High school students in DE Projects as experts and as tutors.
  • Teachers in Secondary Schools. In the Project will participate about 170 High school teachers / / 25 from each country in the training courses, 20 teachers in the International training and curriculum design , another 30 teachers in DE projects.
  • Public officials, Policymakers and representatives of the Civic society. More than 100 representatives of these groups will participate in the project. About 75 will participate in local two day trainings for public officials and civic society activists in DE, 40 will participate in DE projects mainly as consultants and about 40 will participate in National and International DE Conference by the end of the Project.

Project sustainability

  • The Project is  a co-operative and partnership effort with  partners fully engaged in it realization, contributing to its success, sharing  information and expertise and disseminating good practices
  • The Project is going beyond the limits of formal educational structure, is built on a partnership between the educators and students , and on new interactive methods, based on experiential and co-operative learning process
  • Project involving all stakeholders and especially civic society structures and local and central educational authorities.
  • Project combines active learning with active participation in projects  because this is the only way to raise awareness.
  • Project  creates  solidarity and public support in twofold way - once support for the participants in the project and second for the population in developing countries which deals with development problems Project strongly based on democratic values, which will engage the whole personality of the participants
